The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Wednesday, September 27, 2023, a public holiday in commemoration of Eid-ul-Maulud, the birthday of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.
The declaration made from the office of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Oluwatoyin Akinlade through a press statement conveyed the goodwill message of the Honourable Minister, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo to Nigerian youths and the Muslim community.
The Minister told all Nigerians to embrace the virtues of hard work and peaceful disposition to fellow humans, irrespective of faith, ideology, social class and ethnicity, pleading for all hands to be on deck with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s led administration in its effort to build a progressive and enviable nation that all citizens will be proud of.
Marked every 12th of Rabi'ul Awwal of the Islamic calendar, "It is widely believed that the first Eid-el-Maulud celebration was held in 1207. The actual date was preceded by a month-long celebration. Musicians, jugglers, and assorted entertainers attracted people from all over." The day is used to spread love, patience, tolerance, and perseverance. Some use this day to give to the less privileged.
However, it is noteworthy that not all Muslims mark this day especially those of Qatar and Saudi Arabia who are said to be opposed to the idea due to their belief that such a lavish celebration stands against what the prophet stood for, backed also by the notion that the prophet did not celebrate his birthday, so his followers should not.
