Edo NUJ tells online practitioners to abide by the rules

By Bernadette Idalu
Wednesday, November 29, 2023, was a watershed day in the annals of Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ), as it was the day the union officially recognized the existence of online media practitioners operating within the framework of the union thereby allowing the union to draw a distinction between the activities of quacks and real practitioners who are guided by the NUJ code of conduct.

Chairman, Edo State Council of the NUJ, Comrade Festus Alenkhe while reeling out requisite sections of the NUJ constitution which empower and guide the conduct of the group when he opened up the first official line of communication to integrate the online body encouraged members to avoid use of libelous materials which could lead to unnecessary litigations.

He told the media professionals to abide by the ethics of the profession as well as display their requisite journalistic training via their reportage which sticks to the rudiments and flair for fair hearing and balanced reportage.

While giving his felicitous remarks to the group the NUJ chairman nonetheless frowned at the actions of alleged quack practitioners whom he accused of bringing bias and unnecessary heating up of the polity in the buildup towards the off cycle Edo State governorship election billed for September 21, 2024.

He sued for decorum noting that having a body of qualified journalists operate under the aegis of the union helped to rid the online media space of pedlars of fake news which helped at giving credence and visibility to the union on its push to highlight truth and use of unbiased reportage.

Leading the online team to this auspicious round table was  Mr. Sam Dada Ayokhai, the interim secretary of the association.
