Aligning with the set standard by the Edo State government, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, PBAT, after prolonged deliberations with labour, has approved a new national minimum wage of seventy thousand naira, (N70,000), for Nigerian workers, with a promise to review the minimum wage law, every three years.
Though the N615,000 earlier negotiated for by the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, did not sail through, based on the prevailing backdrop of hiccups concerning the negotiation processes with its corresponding angst, however, available minimum wage data for Nigeria shows that the minimum wage has been, "Thirty thousand (#30,000) Naira since April 18, 2019. In 2023, the Government of Nigeria announced an additional NGN 35,000 wage award (wage subsidy) for six months, starting from September 1, 2023. Making the total amount payable to a worker, NGN 65,000 per month."
A statement shared by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, on Thursday, July 18, 2024, based on other proceedings emanating from the scheduled meeting by President Bola Tinubu with the leadership of the NLC and TUC at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, read, “President Tinubu also promised to find ways to assist the private sector and the sub-nationals to pay the minimum wage.
“President Tinubu announced the decisions at the meeting held with leaders of TUC and NLC on Thursday in Abuja, the second time the parties met in seven (7) days.
“The Labour leaders applauded President Tinubu for the fatherly gesture as the president also promised to use his discretionary powers to meet the demands of university unions demanding unpaid four (4) months salaries.”
