Ahead the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, organized "Triennial Delegates Conference" slated for November 27, 2024, in Owerri - Imo State, Barr. Dele Atunbi, today charted a path with members of the Edo State Council of the union, pledging to protect and project the interest of journalists if elected as its next president.
Barr. Atunbi who was at the Edo State Council of the NUJ to curry votes of delegates stated that if voted into the helms of affairs he would ensure that practitioners get exposed to training and retraining programmes.
Atunbi touched on the need to improve the certification of the International Institute of Journalism, IIJ, (the affiliated training school of the NUJ.) He hinted that unionism is about welfarism, thus, his bucket list for journalists include setting in place a safety fund; fighting for a structured salary system; minimum entry level qualification to be pegged at graduate level; fighting quackery and conducting credible elections at state councils.
The candidate said he would give prime attention to development of infrastructure at the NUJ national Secretariat to make the union self sustaining. He pledged to fight for the interest of journalists buoyed on by the fact that the NUJ is a member of the Nigerian Labour Congress.
Chairman, Edo NUJ, Comrade Festus Alenkhe responding to the council's guest, stated, "Your words are challenging. We need peace in the NUJ. From your words, you are set for Owerri 2024. We look towards a successful election. We have ethics that guide us...We look forward to a transparent election at Owerri next week."
