Governor Okpebholo flags off MTN Season 3 championship in Benin

Governor Monday Okpebholo on Thursday, March 13, praised mobile telecommunications service provider, MTN, for bringing the thrill of competitive sports to the doorstep of Edo State youths through its organized sports championship.

Governor Okpebholo welcomed organisers to Edo State, which he called a "Centre of culture and hospitality," as he addressed participants at the main bowl of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City, one of the two venues of the MTN Benin "Champs Season 3" games.

Represented by his deputy, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa, Okpebholo flagged the tournament open, informing organizers that what they had done was bring Edo State youths together in one facility to compete for the next three days from March 13- 15, 2025. He  called on sports lovers to take advantage of the games to win laurels for the state.

Founder and CEO "Making of Champions," Mr. Bambo Akani, organizer of the MTN championship games stated that it was not a mistake that Edo State got chosen as venue for the third (3rd) edition of this championship.

He stated "Benin City is one of the best locations we have ever been to. It was the first location for Season one (1) and also the first location for this season. We love the state of the art stadium and the fact that there are two locations, and stadiums, in the city, we can use for two large events. It is a plus."

He revealed that Edo State is pivotal to sports development in Nigeria haven produced athletic champions who bestride the sporting world. He pointed out that the location of Benin, in Nigeria, for instance, afforded established athletes, especially of Edo descent, an opportunity as role models to congregate in Benin to influence youths for the next three days. 

Also, he said the wonderful support from the Edo State government is another reason why they are back in Benin.
